Trapped in Space

BACKGROUND

A conceptual coffee table book that illustrates a natural science concept through experimental typography and communicates very complex and multiple levels of information through a narrative.

STRATEGY

Claustrophobia, the fear of confined spaces is an anxiety disorder that affects the lives of many. Smothered, is a personal, first hand approach to narrate this extreme phobia through untold stories from the phobics’ journal and their medical notes from therapy. I use the space of the page to express the concept through tightly justified columns, trapped images in text, closely cropped abstract visuals and short sheets. Overprinting, and handwritten notes are used to express the mental chaos, darkness and anxiety. By providing both the irrational and logical aspect of a phobia, I attempt to make the condition understandable and humane.
